WHEN I’M PAINTING… I have the stone I’m working on, a.k.a. my canvas, and the stone I use as a palette. This ‘palette stone’ sits to my right and is used for working out the kinks in the pens, which tend to clog, especially when layering.

IN THE BEGINNING… when this stone got covered in scribbles and doodles and such like, I would wash it off in order to start over – a clean slate, a clean stone. But then I started to see beauty in these unintended marks. They told another tale; one I hadn’t consciously intended. Like channelling, I guess – more dreamscape than sea- or land-scene. And dreams and the subconscious fascinate me and have always featured strongly in my work.

SO I BEGAN… to use the unconscious marks as a base, and then create a conscious set of marks on top of them.

👈🏻 This stone belongs to this series.

THIS STONE FEELS… like it straddles two worlds: that of the sky; and that of the sea. Within it, lies the universe – with its stars and planets, its solar systems and black holes – and the ocean, teaming with dolphins, whales, pebbles, pearls, coral and plant life. Both ancient and beautiful. Both mostly unknown and unexplored. I feel like I am under the ocean, lying on its deepest softest sandiest bed, a blanket of seaweed draped over me, staring up through the layers of water and aquatic life to the other blanket, the sky above. The seaweed distorts my view, carving up the sky into channels and estuaries, each a separate landmass with its own personality and feel. Rather like the drawers of my mind, the library of memories… I can dip and dive into each, uncovering, or perhaps discovering, a new and unique perspective on things.

THIS STONE WAS… born to open your mind to greater possibilities, to deepen your wisdom, and to connect you to your past and future – the ‘then’ and the ‘not quite yet’. It invites you to pull all of the threads together, weaving the sea and sky, time and space, in order to better navigate the story you are mapping out today.

FIREWORKS AND SEAWEED

Where dolphins weave through coral’s grace,
and pearls and shadows share their space.
I lie beneath the ocean’s fold,
on softest sands, in currents cold.

A seaweed shroud across my eyes,
that bends the light of distant skies.
The sea transforms the sky above,
to channels cut by waves that shove.

I drift through realms of sky and deep,
where secrets stir and whispers sleep,
where moonlight threads through waters wide,
and stars reflect on every tide.

A merging place of time and space,
a hidden world that leaves no trace,
where past and future twist and wind,
to form the map within the mind.

It pulls the threads of what’s unseen,
and stitches seams of in-between,
to light the path that lies ahead,
a guide through what is left unsaid.

Beyond the veil of sky and sea,
it weaves a map of what could be,
to navigate the shadowed line,
and find the light that waits to shine.

PLEASE NOTE: this is not a toy, it is delicate, it is meant for ornamental purposes only. If you do happen to drop or accidentally scrape or chip it, you may revarnish it with a thin layer of clear gloss varnish, making sure to allow significant time for it to properly dry. If you get it covered in dirt, grime or drool, you may gently wipe or rinse it. Deeper damage may require touching up the image with paint pens and then revarnishing. Rest assured, most minor incidents can be rescued, but the responsibility lies with you.
